A practical evidence checklist for Australian specifiers comparing outdoor architectural luminaires and considering alternative suppliers.
An alternative luminaire is a new technical proposal, not a brand-name substitution. Start with the intended effect, installation geometry and required documentation. Apply the same acceptance criteria to every supplier, including Modaluce.
This guide is written by Modaluce, a supplier with a commercial interest in the selection. Modaluce is not affiliated with, endorsed by or an authorised substitute for WE-EF, iGuzzini or ERCO. Brand names identify the manufacturers being discussed. No independent comparative testing has been performed for this guide; there is no assertion of equivalent performance, lower cost or superiority.
Define the Australian project brief
Record the surface, viewing positions, throw, maintained-lighting criteria, glare and obtrusive-light limits, colour scenes, installation exposure and service access. Separate architectural accents from road, emergency or other regulated lighting duties. The project's responsible professionals determine applicable requirements and approvals; a product rating cannot approve the installed scheme.
For a tender alternative, retain the original design intent and list every departure explicitly. Submit the proposed exact configuration, calculations and supporting documents to the designer for review before procurement. Similar wattage, housing size or a shared IP number is insufficient.
Where the official ranges help a shortlist
WE-EF's Australian architectural application resource discusses projectors, wallwashers, inground luminaires, optics and architectural integration. It is a useful starting point for those tasks, not evidence that every listed technology is available in every order code.
iGuzzini's outdoor range separates floodlights, linear systems, recessed in-ground luminaires and other outdoor formats. Start with the required installation type, then obtain the technical data for the regional product code. The range index does not establish a matched alternative to a Modaluce model.
ERCO's outdoor projector resource distinguishes accent projection, floodlighting, wallwashing and contour projection. Its Beamer family resource describes darklight lenses, framing, zoom and colour options. Those family statements are not an exact-model performance comparison or proof that all features coexist in one configuration.
Modaluce's catalogue offers a route to the selected fitting's specifications and available public files. CHROMA7 describes a seven-channel RGBWCLA approach in compatible configurations. Extra channels do not alone establish better colour, white quality, efficiency or a replacement for another manufacturer's control system.
Evidence matrix: optics and photometry
Ask all suppliers: identify the exact optic, output setting, colour engine, accessories and aiming position. Provide matching IES or LDT files with provenance, measurement conditions and any modelling qualifications. Calculate the same geometry and maintenance assumptions for every candidate; compare target light and spill, not only lumens.
Available starting evidence: WE-EF's application page discusses optical control; iGuzzini's index identifies optical-task families; ERCO separates projector and wallwasher approaches. Modaluce product pages provide configuration schedules and available photometric files, including modelled files where labelled.
Still to establish: matched files and calculations for each actual proposal. No equal-output, equal-uniformity or equal-glare result is established by the resources above. The photometry guide explains why provenance and configuration identity matter.
Evidence matrix: colour and controls
Ask all suppliers: document the chosen white or colour engine, tested scenes, driver, protocol, channel footprint, addressing, dimming behaviour and failure state. Request the proposed gateway and commissioning scope where a network is involved.
Available starting evidence: the cited manufacturer pages describe range-level control or colour options. Modaluce's exact-variant schedules distinguish available controls; its control guide separates DMX, RDM and DALI. RGBWAF control of up to six channels is not proof of seven-channel RGBWCLA compatibility.
Still to establish: system compatibility, scene appearance on the actual material and any comparative spectral or colour measurements. DMX, DALI, Casambi and Ethernet transport labels are not interchangeable. Do not assume identical colour from an identical numerical command.
Evidence matrix: environment and installation
Ask all suppliers: confirm ambient limits, ingress and impact protection, corrosion suitability, water exposure, cable entries, connectors, mounting loads, exposed temperatures and service access for the exact assembly.
Available starting evidence: the official range resources identify installation formats and manufacturer design claims. Modaluce's application guidance separates inground drainage and loading, underwater conditions and façade geometry.
Still to establish: documented site suitability and the project's approval. IP68 is not a universal immersion depth; stainless steel is not a universal chemical-resistance guarantee. A family environmental statement must not be transferred to another model or supplier.
Evidence matrix: procurement and support
Ask all suppliers: request the current Australian quotation, lead time, warranty terms and exclusions, replacement-part strategy, drawings, commissioning responsibilities and responsible local contact. Include access costs and maintenance assumptions in the comparison, rather than assuming a cheaper fitting means a cheaper installation.
Available starting evidence: the linked official resources provide product-discovery and contact paths. Modaluce's project-specific engineering account describes its approach; a written scope is still needed.
Still to establish: current commercial terms and agreed support for this project. This guide makes no brand-level price, availability, warranty or manufacturing-origin comparison.
Use project records within their limits
Modaluce's existing Australian records identify ML1130 luminaires at 50 Martin Place, ML1139F spike spots at Commonwealth Bank Headquarters, and customised ML2308 recessed linear fittings at International Towers. These first-party accounts connect real applications to supplied products. They are not independent measurements, endorsements by the building owners or proof that a new site will achieve the same outcome.
Other relevant outdoor suppliers
The shortlist need not stop at four brands. Coolon's eLi RGBW resource provides a modular linear example with datasheet, installation and IES links. Anolis's Logan City Council account describes an Australian RGBW architectural installation. These serve different evidence purposes: a technical product resource and a manufacturer-hosted case study. Neither establishes equivalence to another luminaire. Research the exact proposed configuration using the same matrix.
A useful alternative submission
Provide a one-page departures schedule supported by exact order codes, drawings, photometric calculations, colour/control documentation, environmental limits, installation instructions and written commercial terms. Mark unavailable evidence as unavailable. Agree a representative night mock-up where material, glare or colour is critical, then record who approves the final selection.
Sources and review boundary
Official public resources linked above were consulted on 3 November 2026 (UTC). Their statements remain manufacturer information, not independent comparative testing. No exact-model cross-brand equivalence is published because a matched documented test basis was not established. Product ranges and regional availability change; confirm current documents with each supplier. This is a practical selection guide, not legal, electrical, structural or compliance certification.
